EM - What is EM?EM is the abbreviation for Effective Microorganisms and is sold under the trade name of EM-1. EM-1 is a harmless totally one hundred percent organic microbial inoculant of mixed cultures of beneficial naturally fermentative microorganisms that can be applied to soil or compost to increase the growth of plants organically. EM's unique cultures work by enhancing the microbial balance of the soil. These changes in the growing conditions increase the capability of the plants to absorb the natural goodness and food available in the soil or compost. Roots grow stronger which in turn take in more naturally available food and plants grow larger, naturally.
The unique combination of beneficial microorganisms contained in EM has the ability to reduce any diseases that may be present in the soil, this also has a beneficial affect on plants. EM works with all plants flowers, vegetables, fruits, trees, grasses etc. All plants will benefit from EM-1.

How Does EM WorkEM works by naturally manufacturing beneficial substances to enhance plant growth. The unique mixture of EM's create amino acids, nucleic acids, bioactive substances and sugars, all of which promote plant growth and development. The metabolites developed by these micro-organisms are then absorbed directly into plants and act as substrates for increasing beneficial populations. EM also promotes the decomposition of organic material.
EM ferments these materials, thereby removing the unpleasant smells associated with decomposing organic matter. The bioactive substances created by the mixture, such as hormones and enzymes promote active cell and root division. The fungi present in EM stimulates root growth so that all the growth promoters can be absorbed into the plant.

How to Look After EMEM is a 'living culture' of microorganisms, Therefore to maximize the life of EM, it needs to be looked after so please:
" Keep EM in an airtight container " Keep stored EM out of direct sunlight " Store EM at room temperature " Keep EM away from chemicals

What does EM contain? The principal micro-organisms in EM are:
Photosynthetic Bacteria. The photosynthetic or phototropic bacteria are a group of independent, self supporting microbes. These synthesize useful substances from the secretions of roots and organic matter, by using sunlight and the heat of soil as sources of energy.
Lactic acid bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid from sugars and other carbohydrates developed by photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. Some well known, foods and drinks such as yoghurt and pickles have been made with lactic acid bacteria for centuries. Lactic acid is also a strong sterilizing compound, and suppresses harmful micro-organisms
Yeast. Yeasts synthesize anti-microbial and other useful substances required for plant growth from amino acids and sugars secreted by photosynthetic bacteria, organic matter and plant roots
Actinomycetes these suppress harmful fungi and bacteria and can live together with photosynthetic bacteria.
Fungi The exact mixture of the fungi is a trade marked secret however the fungi bring about fermentation and breaks down the organic substances quickly, this increases root growth. The fungi also suppress smell and prevent damage that could be caused by harmful insects.

Totally Safe and OrganicAll of the microbes in EM have been organically certified and are totally safe. The types of microbes used are those already found in many types of food, including cheeses, wines and yoghurts, and all produced in Europe.
