EM Sustainable Living exclusively promotes products and practices containing the organic technology discovered by Dr. Teruo Higa,  Effective Microorganisms or as it is now known EM Technology.

Dr. Teruo Higa accidently discovered the benefits of microorganisms as a soil conditioner.  He was working in the lab and accidentally spilled microorganisms near some shrubs. A few days later, he noticed that those shrubs had grown extremely well. Dr.Higa had grown  up in a farming community and knew that farmers used expensive agrochemical and pesticide treatments for their crops. He thought that he could find a natural method through the use of beneficial microorganisms that would help relieve the farmers of their agrochemical dependency.

Based on his discovery, Dr. Higa experimented to discover the optimal combination of microorganisms and finally created the first use of EM Technology. The first solution was and still is known as EM-1 which contains three different types of beneficial microorganisms: lactic acid bacteria, photosynthetic bacteria and yeasts. They are totally organic and safe to life.

EM 1 was initially used as a soil conditioner that could be used on gardens or agricultural crops and allowed farmers and growers to reduce their dependency on expensive agrochemicals, but over the years many different beneficial uses have been found for EM-1.  When used as a soil conditioner EM-1 creates healthy soil to allow plants and vegetables to grow to their maximum potential.

All products using EM Technology contain EM-1 in some part of their manufacturing process. However, being a soil conditioner is not the only application of EM Technology. It has now known that EM-1 is a cost-effective, environmentally safe, nontoxic, all-natural product that has many household, health, garden, farm, and industrial uses including:

Animal digestion/immune system enhancement
Household and agricultural deodorising
Household cleaning (counters and glass, pet odors and stains, nappy odours and stains, showers and baths, laundry deodoriser and freshener, etc.)
Mold and mildew elimination (showers and baths, lawn furniture, home exteriors, mouldy air conditioners and ducts, musty cars, etc.)
Septic tank maintenance and odour reduction
Plant food and root growth acceleration
Garden and landfill composting acceleration
Soil fertility enhancement
Waste management
Water purification
Polluted water, soil, and stagnant pond remediation
The lists goes on and on, with new uses still being discovered.
